Professor Wu Hongqi of Jinan University came to our college to give academic lectures

Onthe afternoon of June 14, 2018, Professor Wu Hongqi, director of theresearch center of historical geography of Jinan University and vicepresident of Guangdong Institute of historical geography, was invitedto give an academic lecture on the theme of "characteristics,value and utilization of traditional local records map". Thislecture is sponsored by the Department of Humanities and SocialSciences, the College of Humanities and law, and hosted by Chinaagricultural historical heritage research institute. It is the FourthLecture in the Academic Salon of agricultural history research.Professor Ni Genjin, director of the Institute of agriculturalhistory, Professor Wang Fuchang, Associate Professor Zhao Yanping,Professor Wei Luling, lecturer Yu Gege, teacher Tang Yi, graduatestudents and undergraduates of the Department of history attended theacademic lectures. The lecture was presided over by Zhao Yanping, anassociate professor.

 

ProfessorWu Hongqi gives a lecture

Mr.Wu Hongqi, who is a famous historical geography expert, has beenengaged in the research and teaching of historical geography for along time, among which he has a deeper research on the agriculturalhistorical geography of the Yuan Dynasty. As an indispensable part ofAncient Local Chronicles, the traditional local chronicles map hasits important scientific and humanistic value. According to ProfessorWu's research, the total number of maps in the local chronicles ofall dynasties in China should be more than 100000, which is more thanpeople imagination in quantity, content and variety. This lecturefocuses on the characteristics, value and utilization of thetraditional local records map from five aspects. First of all, itpoints out that the traditional local records map has not only thebasic characteristics of the traditional Chinese map, but also somespecial characteristics. Secondly, it focuses on its characteristicsand values: (1) taking into account the scientific and human valuesof the local records map, actively carrying out multi perspectiveresearch; (2) paying attention to the comprehensive characteristicsof the local records map information, strengthening the interactionbetween the elements; (3) requiring both diachronic research andregional difference research; (4) understanding the limitations ofthe local records map historical materials, and paying attention tothe mutual evidence of various historical materialsFinally,according to the case study of Macao historical geography, this paperintroduces the research methods and experience of the comprehensiveutilization of historical map materials.

AfterProfessor Wu’s explanation, Professor Wang Fuchang commented on thelecture according to his own research experience, praised ProfessorWu’s lecture for its inspiration and provided ideas for academicresearch.

 

Atthe end of the interactive part, Professor Wu Hongqi and his teachersand students had in-depth communication and exchange on the use oflocal chronicle map. Professor Wu Hongqi’s lecture was vivid andhumorous, rich in content and broad in vision, which stimulated thestudents’ active discussion and participation.

WuHongqi, born in 1964, is from Baoji City, Shaanxi Province. Hereceived his doctorate in history from Shaanxi Normal University in1991.In 2000, he was selected into the trans century talent trainingprogram (HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES) of the Ministry ofeducation. At present, he is the director, professor and doctoralsupervisor of the research center of historical geography of JinanUniversity, vice president of Guangdong Historical Geography ResearchAssociation, executive director of China ancient capital society,member of the professional committee of historical geography of ChinaGeography Society, editorial board member of China historicalgeography treatise and editorial board member of historicalgeography. He has been engaged in scientific research and teaching ofhistorical geography and ecological environment change for a longtime. In recent years, he has focused on academic research in Lingnanhistorical geography, Macao historical geography, overseas Chinesehistorical geography and other fields. He has published agriculturalgeography of the Yuan Dynasty, Xian historical geography research,historical records and Chinese geography, exploration and practice ofhistorical geography methodology, pearl of pearl. There are more thanten works on the interaction between urban development and ecologicalenvironment in the Yangtze River Delta, the intertwined vision oftime and space: the study of historical geography in Macao, andnearly 200 academic papers published in the academic journals such asthe study of Chinese history, Xinhua digest, the treatise on ChineseHistorical Geography, the study of Macao, and the study of overseasChinese history.
